When to choose SFP-10G-SR
The SR (short reach) module is the standard choice inside a building or data center hall: server-to-switch, switch-to-switch within a rack row, and storage links under 300m. Because it uses 850nm over multimode fiber, the optics and the fiber plant are both cheaper than single-mode equivalents. If your existing cabling is OM3 or OM4, the SR module is the drop-in answer.
When to choose SFP-10G-LR
The LR (long reach) module carries 10G up to 10km over single-mode fiber — between buildings, across a campus, or into a carrier handoff. It is the default for ISP backhaul and any link that must cross real distance. Note that LR modules will not link over multimode fiber: the 1310nm wavelength and single-mode transceiver are matched to single-mode cabling only.
